Fix It: The Freezer is Not Freezing, The Fridge is Not Cold

October 26, 2009

I recently came across this post in our appliance repair forum, and thought it may help some of you out.

Q: “Ok, so the ice maker has been leaking for about 2 years now, just an inconvenience. Today, freezer is thawing out, fridge at 70′.  Took a hair dryer to back inside of freezer, seems like a lot of ice melted.  Fan seems to be running more than before.”

“I have seen that the ice maker water valve needs replacing. Is that it, or do I need to remove the inside of the freezer compartment and replace all those parts too?”

“I have it plugged back in for about an hour now.  Freezer getting cold, nothing in fridge compartment/ any suggestions would be appreciated. It’s 8 years old.”

One of our regular posters, applianceman, generously offered this advice:

A: “When you tried to defrost it with the hair dyer did you remove the back panel of the freezer? If not you need to go back and remove it and melt all the ice behind it (if there is any).”

“You say the ice maker is leaking but is it leaking in the freezer or in the floor? If it is leaking in the freezer the water from the ice maker may have leaked on the coils, froze and blocked airflow. If this seems to be the case melt all the ice, clean out the tube that feeds the ice maker water and replace the ice maker.”

“If the ice that is on the coils didn’t seem to come from the ice maker you may have a defrost problem. Which would be the defrost control, defrost heater or defrost thermostat.”

Stinky office refrigerator sends 28 to hospital

May 13, 2009

If you ever needed a reason to keep your refrigerator clean, then read this article from the San jose Mercury News, “Stench from rotten refrigerator sickens 28; San Jose office evacuated.”

Apparently, not only was there rotting food in the mini refrigerator, but it was unplugged and moved to a conference room for cleaning according to CNN.com.

“ The refrigerator had been unplugged for some time and moved into a conference room for cleaning. When the woman tried to scrub down the mess, the stench from the cleaning chemicals combined with the rotting food.”

“Someone also took some spray and tried to deodorize the air,’ said Capt. Barry Stallard of the San Jose fire department. “And it turned out that was spot cleaner, not a deodorant. So it made people very sick.”

Bam, all that stink created the perfect noxious smell storm that sent 28 people to hospital and ended up in a massive building-wide evacuation. A HazMat team was called in to investigate the source of the stench. One experienced firefighter theorized the powerful odor might have been produced by rotting meat, but the mixture of different cleaning chemicals probably did not help matters.

In the end everyone turned out to be ok, and everyone joked about the matter. Oh and the original woman that was brave and considerate enough to clean out the stinky fridge?

“She suffers from allergies, firefighters said, and had had nasal surgery. She didn’t smell a thing, ” according to the story on CNN.com.

Some refrigerator cleaning tips

Use the proper cleaners and don’t mix cleaners. Especially do not mix ammonia with bleach. This combination results in an irritating fume called chloramine gas, according to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.   “Exposure to chloramine causes irritation to the eyes, nose, throat, and airways. Symptoms include teary eyes, runny nose, sore throat, coughing and chest congestion.”

Do not mix bleach to products containing acid such as drain openers, toilet bowl cleaners, oven cleaners, and vinegar as this combination produces chlorine gas.

“Chloramine gas, causes irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Chlorine gas, however, causes more severe and long-lasting effects than chloramine. Some exposures to chlorine gas may require medical treatment,” Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Open a window when cleaning. When using strong cleaning agents like mildew remover, oven cleaners, drain openers, or toilet bowl cleaners, take a break if you feel light headed, dizzy, throat irritation, difficulty breathing, or coughing. Open a window to help ventilate the area.

Visit the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for a list of potentially hazardous cleaning chemicals.

Prevent this happening in the first place!

Regularly clean out your fridge and toss expired products, leftovers, and anything fuzzy or green that shouldn’t be. To keep your fridge smelling fresh, consider using a Fridge Aid Deodorizer that destroys obnoxious odors before they start. These refrigerator deodorizers can also be purchased in a 12 pack, so you can have an odor-free fridge all year.

Easy Appliance Fixes

October 14, 2008

Nothing makes you feel more foolish that calling a repair man only to have him flip a switch, push a button, clean the lint out of your dryer and then hand you a $100 bill for something you could have done yourself.

Before you dial your phone, check out these easy, simple, and quick appliance fixes that you can do yourself.

Save money! Appliance repairs are not always complicated. Red about some simple fixes.

Problem: Garbage disposer won’t spin.

Simple Repair Fix: If your garbage disposer won’t start, push the reset button located at the bottom of the disposer. All disposers have an overload feature that automatically shuts off the power when the motor becomes overloaded and gets too hot. Wait till the motor cools and push the reset button usually located on the side of or under the unit.

If the disposer hums, but doesn’t spin, it may have something stuck in it. Switch the disposer off, and try manually turning the blades with a disposer wrench or Allen wrench by turning a bottom bolt located on the bottom and outside of the disposer’s canister.

Problem: Your refrigerator is not cooling properly or stops cooling.

Simple Repair Fix: Check the coils for pet hair and debris buildup. The coils are the black tube-and-wire grid that cools the fluid in the compressor. Dirty coils will cause the compressor to overheat and trigger the overload switch. Your coils will be located in one of two places: open the grille at the bottom of the refrigerator to get to the coils or pull out your fridge to get to the coils on back. Use a coil cleaning brush to brush off the coils and a vacuum to clean.

Cleaning your refrigerator coils will also save you money by cooling more efficiently.

Problem: Your dishwasher is not getting your dishes clean.

Simple Repair Fix: Food and other debris get stuck in the dishwasher filter preventing water from getting to the spray arms. To clean your dishwasher filter, pull out the lower dishwasher rack and remove the filer cover located inside the bottom of your dishwasher. Remove debris off the screen (or use a wet vacuum if you have one). Test the float switch by sliding it up and down to make sure nothing is stuck to prevent it from working properly. If it sticks, clean it with water.
