Step 1: Remove all dishware from the dishwasher. Open the dishwasher and place one tablet in the main detergent tray. Close the tray.

Step 2: Place the second tablet in the prewash tray or in the bottom of the dishwasher. Close the dishwasher. Run the dishwasher on the most aggressive cycle–heavy duty scrub, high-temperature wash, etc. For best results, continue to Step 3. If you do not have a disposer, skip Step 3.

Appliance Repair Help:

Why is my dishwasher leaving my glasses dirty?

November 3, 2008

Question: Every time I run a load in my dishwasher, there always seem to be a couple of glasses in the back of the dishwasher with food remnants on them. Why is this happening?

Answer: Your dishwasher’s wash and spray arms might need to be cleaned. The sprayer arms spin and dispense water during your dishwasher’s cleaning and rinsing cycles. The arms have tiny holes which water come out of and over time those holes might have become clogged with food particles or mineral build-up from your water. There are usually two sprayer arms in most types of dishwashers, an upper sprayer arm and a lower sprayer arm. The arms can be detached from your dishwasher for cleaning. Remove the lower sprayer arm first by twisting off the twist cap that holds the arm to the motor shaft.

Remove and clean both sprayer arms with some mild dishwashing liquid and water. Do not stick matches or toothpicks to unclog the sprayer arm ports holes as these items can easily break off, further plugging the port holes. Also, do not use anything made of metal, like a nail or end of a screwdriver, as these items can damage the port holes or enlarge them.

While the lower sprayer arm is removed, check to see if your dishwasher has a filter or strainer that needs to be cleaned. On some dishwasher models, this filter or strainer is located at the bottom of the tub underneath the lower sprayer arm. You might need the help of a screwdriver to disengage the filter from its setting in the tub. Remove the strainer and clean it with mild dishwashing liquid and water and place it back in the dishwasher. Return the lower wash and spray arm back to its setting, and screw the twist cap on securely. Clean the upper sprayer arm in the same manner.

Easy Appliance Fixes

October 14, 2008

Nothing makes you feel more foolish that calling a repair man only to have him flip a switch, push a button, clean the lint out of your dryer and then hand you a $100 bill for something you could have done yourself.

Before you dial your phone, check out these easy, simple, and quick appliance fixes that you can do yourself.

Save money! Appliance repairs are not always complicated. Red about some simple fixes.

Problem: Garbage disposer won’t spin.

Simple Repair Fix: If your garbage disposer won’t start, push the reset button located at the bottom of the disposer. All disposers have an overload feature that automatically shuts off the power when the motor becomes overloaded and gets too hot. Wait till the motor cools and push the reset button usually located on the side of or under the unit.

If the disposer hums, but doesn’t spin, it may have something stuck in it. Switch the disposer off, and try manually turning the blades with a disposer wrench or Allen wrench by turning a bottom bolt located on the bottom and outside of the disposer’s canister.

Problem: Your refrigerator is not cooling properly or stops cooling.

Simple Repair Fix: Check the coils for pet hair and debris buildup. The coils are the black tube-and-wire grid that cools the fluid in the compressor. Dirty coils will cause the compressor to overheat and trigger the overload switch. Your coils will be located in one of two places: open the grille at the bottom of the refrigerator to get to the coils or pull out your fridge to get to the coils on back. Use a coil cleaning brush to brush off the coils and a vacuum to clean.

Cleaning your refrigerator coils will also save you money by cooling more efficiently.

Problem: Your dishwasher is not getting your dishes clean.

Simple Repair Fix: Food and other debris get stuck in the dishwasher filter preventing water from getting to the spray arms. To clean your dishwasher filter, pull out the lower dishwasher rack and remove the filer cover located inside the bottom of your dishwasher. Remove debris off the screen (or use a wet vacuum if you have one). Test the float switch by sliding it up and down to make sure nothing is stuck to prevent it from working properly. If it sticks, clean it with water.

Dishwashers and heating (or why aren’t my dishes dry?)

If you have problems with your dishes still being wet when at the end of the dry cycle, check to see if the rinse aid dispenser needs filling, check to see how well the dishes are loaded, and make sure a large item doesn’t block smaller items.

Did you use the proper amount of detergent? Too little or too much detergent can have an affect on how well dishes dry. Have you selected the heated drying option? A rinse aid can help your dishes to dry better also. Is the rinse aid dispenser empty?

The next things to check are the filters, drain valve, drying fan, heating element, and the thermostat. Sometimes a clogged filter will prevent all the water from being able to exit the unit.

Clean or replace clogged filters. A faulty drain valve that leaves too much water in the cabinet can be to blame. Is there too much standing water left in the unit after the dry cycle is complete? Check for blockages at drain valve then.

Some dishwashers have a fan that circulates the cabinet air to help dry the dishes. If the fan is not working properly, you need to replace it. At the bottom of the dishwasher is a heating element that warms the air in the dishwasher. The increased temperature speeds up the evaporation process and decreases the drying time. Visually inspect the element and look for any burned or broken areas on it, and if it’s burned out or if you can’t measure continuity with it removed, it will need to be replaced.

There is also a thermostat that measures the water temperature and drying temperature. If the thermostat is faulty, the cycles may not complete properly. If it’s faulty, you need to replace it. You may want to unload the dishes in the bottom rack first so that any water left pooled on dishes in the top rack won’t spill onto the bottom rack’s dishes.
