Recycle old refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers at no charge

Allegheny County residents in Pittsburgh, Penn., can recycle their old refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers at no charge

If you live in Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, Penn., you can have your old refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water coolers and other old household appliances that contain refrigerants, picked up and disposed of for free, thanks to a grant from the county’s Clean Air Fund.

The program aims to count down on illegal dumping, save landfill space, and to prevent the release of refrigerant gases that deplete the ozone layer which is harmful to human health.

Residents from the county can arrange for a curbside pickup by calling 1-888-GO-FREON (1-888-463-7366). If you live in the western suburbs, call 412-279-6001.

The Appliance Warehouse and Parkway Heating and Air Conditioning are carrying out the program under contracts with the Allegheny County Health Department, ” according to an article appearing online on the South Pittsburgh Reporter’s website.

I really applaud the Allegheny County Health Department for undertaking this important environmental and health-related issue. I checked out their website and they seem to have other valuable programs going on available to county residents, including a Smoke Alarm giveaway.
